Tyra Helin‘s spatial story
I grew up in Stockholm, except for a year when I was five, when my family moved to Mariehamn, Åland. I quickly picked up the Åländska dialect, which, unfortunately, faded away after we moved back to Stockholm. Today, it saddens me to say that I have a hard time even imitating it well.
After finishing high school, I took some time to work and backpack through Central America before deciding to start studying. My academic journey began in Lund, a picturesque university city in southern Sweden. However, after just one semester, the covid pandemic struck. With student facilities temporarily closed and lectures held online, my time in Lund turned out quite different from what I had imagined. While the city usually bustling with students was unusually quiet, I made the most of my free time exploring Lund’s beautiful surroundings. It’s a wonderful place, close to great nature.
Once restrictions eased I took the opportunity to study abroad, spending an exchange semester at Santa Clara University in California, USA. It is one of my better decisions – exploring California was a time filled of freedom and the feeling of endless possibilities. Weekend trips to San Francisco, road-tripping along Highway 1, and hiking in Yosemite National Park are some of my favorite memories. When the adventure came to an end I moved back to Stockholm, which certainly feels the most like home.
While I cherish the vibrancy of big cities and all the incredible experiences they offer, my favorite place to go remains Föglö, a small community on Åland with only a few hundred inhabitants. This is where my grandfather was born and raised, and where my family has a summer house. Some of my fondest childhood memories are picking berries in the woods, learning how to fish and driving a boat with my grandpa. Here I feel connected with nature and to my roots, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
